Asbestos removal

Asbestos is the common name for special, fibrous mineral forms of certain silicates. Its molecular structure shows traces of iron, magnesium, calcium and potassium in addition to silica. Asbestos structure consists of extremely thin filaments, measuring less than one-thousandth of a millimetre in diametre. The name comes from the Greek word “asbestos” meaning “inextinguishable” or “everlasting”.

The following types of asbestos exist: white asbestos (chrysotile), blue asbestos (crocidolite), brown asbestos (amosite). These minerals are well-known all over the world, can be found on the ground surface even.

Major extraction sites are found in Canada, in the territory of the former Soviet Union, and in South-Africa. Asbestos use rose dynamically from the beginning of the century until the mid 1970s, however, its use is declining since then. The reason behind its decline is that asbestos fibres when inhaled can be very harmful, therefore, since 1 January 2005 it can no longer be sold, used or recycled, and its removal is subject to authorisation and it is strictly regulated.

Major products made of asbestos are: fireproof materials, gaskets and packing materials, filters, brake linings and clutches, asbestos-cement products, and asbestos-based plastering for protection against fire, heat and noise.

In the construction industry two types of asbestos products are known: strong bound (usually with a specific gravity of 1 t/m³ or more – e.g. asbestos-cement or like mineral materials) and loose bound (usually with a specific gravity of 1 t/m³ or less – e.g. sprayed plastering) asbestos-based products.
